If Social Security is the only income you will be reporting on your joint tax return, then there is no need to file the tax return.

However, if you have other income to report on the tax return along with the Social Security then you will need to file a tax return.

Up to 85% of Social Security Retirement/Disability/Survivors benefits becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security reaches:

  • Married Filing Jointly - $32,000
  • Single or Head of Household - $25,000
  • Married Filing Separately - 0

You can use TurboTax to complete and file a tax return regardless of where you are currently residing.  If you choose to e-file a tax return you will need an internet connection.  Otherwise you can print and mail the tax return.

Go to this TurboTax website to purchase a CD or Download of the current tax year (2017) desktop editions - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/

You will need a US credit card with a US billing address to purchase products or services from the TurboTax website.

The TurboTax online editions for tax year 2017 should be available in early December.

I have tried to order turbotax but I cannot input my Japan address. It only wants a US address.  Can you help with this? I have used turbotax last year while living in Japan.
