You enter them in the same area as the Federal estimates.
To enter state income taxes owed and paid for a prior year on a federal tax return -
- Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
- Click on Deductions and Credits
- Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
- Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
- On Other Income Taxes, click on the start or update button
On the next screen scroll down to Other Income Taxes Paid in 2016
Or enter state taxes paid in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to state taxes paid.

Does the amount I owed in NY state taxes for my caregiver during the year get transferred to my NY state returns? It appears only the federal tax liability is reported on Schedule H. When I enter the estimated taxes I paid NY it appears that I paid those amounts towards my own tax liability. NY State is challenging my reporting of the amounts I withheld and paid on behalf of my caregiver as improperly reported as estimated taxes. Is NY different than other states?
