Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I had to file an extension and paid estimated taxes at that time. Does the amount now shown for refund reflect that payment or will I get that initial payment back?

I paid $1,923 when I filed the extension.  After correcting and completing my return it shows a refund of roughly $341.  Does that mean I should have only owed $1582 and am now received a refund of the recent overpayment?  Or would it mean that I shouldn't have owed anything, should be getting a $341 refund, and will now be getting my $1,923 payment returned to me?

For your answers LOOK at the form and not just at the Refund-O-Meter ... look for the extension payment Schedule 3, line 9  ... was it included in the payments section ?

How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing?

You can view your entire return or just your 1040 form before you e-file:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Select Tax Tools in the left menu (if you don't see this, select the menu icon in the upper-left corner).
  3. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then:
    • Preview your entire return: Select Print Center and then Print, Save, or Preview This Year's Return (you may be asked to register or pay first).
    • View only your 1040 form: Select Tools. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then Preview my 1040 in the left menu.

As Critter-3 mentioned, "payment with extension" should show up on Schedule 3, Line 9.   It will also be included in the figure showing on your Form 1040, Line 31.  You should be able to Preview both forms with the steps she provided above.

If you used TurboTax to file the extension, it "may" be prepopulated, but you need to check.

If your extension payment has not been reported, here are the navigation steps to do so.  You can also go through the steps as another way to confirm it has been reported.

  • In the left menu column, click the Federal tab
  • Then at the top click the Deductions & Credits tab.
  • Scroll way down on the "Tax Breaks" screen to  "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid."
  • Click "Show More" to expand the subtopics, and choose "Income Taxes Paid."  (click Start or Revisit).
  • The next screen, titled "Income Taxes Paid," should let you start the interview to confirm or report an extension payment.
