I filed for divorce in December 2017 and we have been living separately, is this considered 'legally separated' or 'married'?

Unless the divorce decree was finalized in 2017, you are still married. A legal separation has a decree of separate maintenance. If you either of the have the decrees, you can consider yourself unmarried.
