Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I do not have a 8889-T. Turbo tax keeps asking for line 18 A1 during the review. I don't have this info and it won't let me file. All I have is a 1095-B and 1095-c.

Don’t worry about the 1095-B and –C; they are not relevant to your HSA interview in TurboTax.

The form 8889 is not sent to you by anyone; it is a form completed by TurboTax and added to your return based on information that you supplied about your Health Savings Account (HSA).

The section that Line 18 is in is on form 8889 in the section referring to “Failure to maintain HDHP coverage”.  TurboTax is asking for information from your 8889 on your 2016 return.

You should have triggered this when

1.     you indicated that you were in the HSA on December 1, 2016 (yes, 2016) (see screenshot #1, “What type of high deductible plan did [name] have on December 1, 2016)?), and

2.     you indicated that you were not covered by the HDHP in every month of 2017 (see screenshots #4 “Was [name] covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in 2017” and #5 “Let’s Maximize your Contribution Limit”, which triggers screenshot #2 “Did [name] High Deductible Health Plan coverage lapse in 2017 due to a disability?”).

If you are in this situation, you must complete the questions on the next screen (after screenshot #2) – see screenshot #3 “How much did [name] contribute to an HSA in 2016?”, which asks you for some information from your 2016 HSA in order to be able to fill in Line 18.

So, if you are in this situation, then go find your 2016 return and enter the information from the 8889 (screenshot #3).

If you didn’t make any answers like this, then I suggest you delete your HSA entries and start over.

The safest - although brute force - way to fix this is to do the following:

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 8889-T, 8889-S (if one), and 1099-SA (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview.
