I cannot efile my South Carolina return because I have a refundable credit. Is this correct or a bug?

I am receiving the following error when trying to efile my South Carolina return. "Returns with Other Refundable Credits in the Payments and Refundable Credits section on Form SC1040 cannot be e-filed."  I am claiming the Exception Needs Tuition Credit.  This seems like an odd error, since refundable credits or overpayments are not uncommon.  Is this an error, or do I have to mail in the return?

This is not an error - you will have to mail in the return

SC Form I-361, 2017 PARENTAL REFUNDABLE CREDIT is not supported by TurboTax

(See State Forms Availability Table for TurboTax Individual (Personal) Tax Products)

Per the 2017 SC1040 INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX FORM & INSTRUCTIONS, this form must be attached to your SC 1040 Individual Tax Return. Since it is not supported by TurboTax, the return will have to be filed by mail.

I came here wondering this exact same thing as need to file SC Form I-361 this year (and have already purchased TurboTax given using it for over a decade).

Does this mean I can use Turbotax to file federal taxes but for state I could fill everything, print to PDF, edit the PDF + add Form I-361 manually and then mail in my tax return?

Thanks!

Yes, this does mean that you will need to mail your tax return with this form attached in order to receive the refundable credit.

This form SC Form 1-361, Parental Refundable Credit is not supported by TurboTax. Since it is not supported by TurboTax, it will need to be mailed.

There are limited funds for the credit and once all of the funds are gone, credit applications will be placed on a waiting list if all the $2 million in funds have been granted. If this fund were to be e-filed, the tax return may show a credit that is not available if the funds have all been used,

Thanks for the response!

We did already apply and get approved for this tax credit with the approval letter noting that we'd need to file Form I-361 to get it.

Does this mean I could do my state taxes with Turbotax and instead of filing online print to PDF, add the I-361 form and change my SC-1040 in a PDF editor to reflect the correct amount? (I'm hoping to avoid having to fill out all the SC tax forms manually.)

Thanks!
