Are you keeping the original screen open when you go retrieve the code? You have to leave it open and use a second window or second tab to go to get your email. Or you could retrieve the email using your phone. If you close that first screen, it resets everything, and the code will be seen as expired.
I cant get into my e-mail fast enough to retrieve the six digit code in order to file my taxes. Don't to how to keep the page open to get to the e-mail fast enough.
How do I use the phone to get the code as I only have a desktop computer
Ok ... open the email in a separate window before you ask for the code ... then keep the TT window open and switch windows to get the code then come back and enter it .... you just have to toggle between the windows or tabs depending on how you set it up. OR have the code sent to your phone by text.
Make sure to leave the window open that asks you for the code. If you close this window and go back after you receive the code, the code will no longer be valid. If you need your browser to get your e-mail, open a new separate window, don't close. Also, make sure you are using the most recent code and not using a prior one. Every time that you ask for a code it cancels out all the previous ones that were sent and only takes the most recent. Please wait a few minutes after each code request to receive your email. It is not generated instantly.
You can also request your code via text message. To receive your codes through text please complete the following:
If you are still unable to get the code to work through text, choose I forgot my user ID or password and then choose I don't know my email address or user ID. You’ll be asked to provide some information about yourself, and then you’ll be asked a few questions verify your identity. If that method fails, you’ll get a phone number to contact customer support.
How do I keep the TT window open and switch to my e-mail at the same time.

As @Critter told you in her answer -
Make sure to leave the window open that asks you for the code. If you close this window and go back after you receive the code, the code will no longer be valid. If you need your browser to get your e-mail, open a new separate window, don't close.
If you do not know how to open more than one browser window then ask a friend or child to teach you or google search a utube video.
Or you can use a second tab in the same window, but do not close the first tab. When you add a second tab, you won't see the first page but it will still be open in the background, and once you get the code you can get back to the original screen that asks for the code by clicking on the original tab.
Another option if you have a smart phone is the following:
Instead of a second window or a second tab is to leave the browser open and check your email with your phone to get the code.
ADDENDUM:
Oops! I see from one of your comments way up in this thread that you don't have such a phone?
While in an email I am told a code was sent to my email. In order to see the code I must leave the email and go into my Gmail. Then when I enter I am told it is the wrong code
I don't know how to keep the window open
I only know how to leave the email and go to Gmail. I do not know how to keep the email window open

It may be a matter of semantics, but it's not an "email window" that you keep open. It's the TurboTax program window that asks for the email verification code that you have to keep open.
If you're using a computer, while keeping that browser window open, launch another instance of the browser window or use a separate browser tab to check your email while leaving the TurboTax window/tab open. Or if you have a second browser on your computer, use that second browser to check your email while keeping the first browser window open. Or you can leave the computer TurboTax window open while you use your phone to check your email for the code.
