There are two slightly different versions of the self-employed TurboTax.  Just check at the top to see if you have a Federal Taxes tab or a Business tab and I have included instructions to enter the 1099-MISC you paid your contractors for both versions.

To enter the 1099s you paid, in Turbo Tax Self Employed with the Federal Taxes tab at the top

  • Please click on the Federal Taxes tab, at the top.
  • Then select, Income and Expenses tab
  • You may see a prompt for your Self-Employment but if not, click on
  • Check for More Income and then Skip to See All Income
  • Scroll down to Self-Employment, by the Blue icon,
  • Click on Show more and Revisit for Income and Expenses.
  • Click on Edit for your business
  • Scroll down to the blue box, Add Expenses for this Work
  • Scroll down to Less Common Expenses and click on the little blue triangle
  • Scroll down and select Contract Labor for your 1099s paid
  • Click on Continue at the bottom.
  • It will walk you through the rest.

If you are already in the Turbo Tax Self Employed with the Business tab at the top

  • To enter 1099 Business Expenses
  • Click on the Business tab
  • Then Continue and I'll choose what to work on
  • Update your Profit or Loss from a Business
  • Click on the Edit button for the name of your business
  • Under Business Expenses, with the blue bar graph icon,
  • click on Update or Start for Other Common Business Expenses
  • Scroll down to Contract Labor and Start
