I am confused as to why I am being charged for more then the basic version - I never added MAX and I never upgraded from the free version. It should be $55

It looks like you are in the TurboTax Deluxe product, which includes the 1040 form with itemized deductions (Schedules 1–6, Schedule A and Schedule C income), along with everything in Free Edition and PLUS. We likely recommended Deluxe based on your tax situation falling into one of these categories. 

For MAX benefits, if you do not want to pay for MAX with audit defense you can remove them on the "review your order" screen before you file.
