I am adding a 1099-int for $24.57 from a local credit union. Turbo Tax is making upgrade to process this. It has not done this in previous years. Did something change?

How are you entering it?  You should be able to enter the interest from the 1099-INT and not upgrade.

You can enter it by clicking the following:

  1. Federal
  2. Income
  3. Show more next to Interest and Dividends
  4. Start next to interest on 1099-INT

Situations covered (assuming no added tax complexity):

  • W-2 income
  • Interest or dividends (1099-INT/1099-DIV) that don’t require filing a Schedule B
  • IRS standard deduction
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC)
  • Student loan interest deduction

Situations not covered:

  • Itemized deductions claimed on Schedule A
  • Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G
  • Business or 1099-NEC income
  • Stock sales (including crypto investments)
  • Rental property income
  • Credits, deductions and income reported on other forms or schedules

If you don’t have a Form 1040 return with limited credits, we have other paid options to file using TurboTax.

How does TurboTax make any money?

We want our customers to love our products and services. Because we have customers who pay for our premium products and services, we can offer free tax filing. We offer additional paid benefits that go beyond filing your Form 1040 return with limited credits for free, but they're optional.

Thanks for responding. The first time I did it, I used the drag and drop feature to import the info. It was seeing it as a foreign bank that way. I deleted the document and re-added by manually typing the info in. It isn't showing it as a foreign bank now but it is still trying to make me upgrade.

It may still be "thinking" you have a foreign bank.  You can try deleting the 1099-INT form altogether and then go back and re-enter.

Depending on how far you got, if this doesn't work, you may want to use Clear and Start Over to get rid of all memory of the form.  When you do this, be sure to manually enter the 1099-INT

  1. On the menu bar on the left that shows.

  1. Select Tax Tools
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. On the Pop-Up menu select Delete a Form
  4. This will give you all of the forms in your return
  5. Scroll down to the form you want to delete
  6. Select the Form
  7. Click on Delete

Always use extreme caution when deleting information from your tax return.  There could be unintended consequences.

To clear and start over select Tools>>Clear and Start Over
