I always itemized before. Why not now?

How much were your itemized deductions last year?

The standard deduction for 2018 has increased, it might be that your Itemized deductions are now lower than your Standard deduction.

Filing Status                           2018 Tax year               2017 Tax year
Single                                      $12,000                          $   6,350
Married, Filing Joint                 $24,000                          $12,700
Married, Filing Separate          $12,000                          $   6,350
Head of Household                  $18,000                          $9,350

  • The standard deduction is $1,300 higher for those who are over 65 or blind; it’s $1,600 higher if also unmarried and not a surviving spouse.
  • If someone can claim you as a dependent, you get a smaller standard deduction.
