There are 17 unique categories for entering business expenses in the TurboTax Home and Business program for a Schedule C.  If you have a particular expense that does not fit in the other 16 categories listed use Other Miscellaneous Expenses at the bottom of the list.

·         Click on Business

·         Click on Business Income and Expenses

·         Click on I'll choose what I work on

·         On Profit or Loss from Business, click on the start or update button

On the next screen, click on Edit for your business listed.

On the next screen scroll down to Business Expenses

On Other Common Business Expenses, click on the start or update button

If you are new to being self employed and  acting as your own bookkeeper and tax preparer you need to get educated ....

If you have net self employment income of $400 or more you have to file a schedule C in your personal 1040 return for self employment business income. You may get a 1099-Misc for some of your income but you need to report all your income.  So you need to keep your own good records. Here is some reading material……

There is also QuickBooks Self Employment bundle you can check out which includes one Turbo Tax Home & Business return and will help you keep up in your bookkeeping all year along with calculating the estimated payments needed ....

Self Employment tax (Scheduled SE) is generated if a person has $400 or more of net profit from self-employment on Schedule C.  You pay 15.3% for 2017 SE tax on 92.35% of your Net Profit greater than $400.  The 15.3% self employed SE Tax is to pay both the employer part and employee part of Social Security and Medicare.  So you get social security credit for it when you retire.  You do get to take off the 50% ER portion of the SE tax as an adjustment on line 27 of the 1040.  The SE tax is already included in your tax due or reduced your refund.  It is on the 1040 line 57.  The SE tax is in addition to your regular income tax on the net profit.

PAYING ESTIMATES
For SE self employment tax - if you have a net profit (after expenses) of $400 or more you will pay 15.3% for 2017  SE Tax on 92.35% of your net profit in addition to your regular income tax on it. So if you have other income like W2 income your extra business income might put you into a higher tax bracket.

You must make quarterly estimated tax payments for the current tax year (or next year) if both of the following apply:
- 1. You expect to owe at least $1,000 in tax for the current tax year, after subtracting your withholding and credits.

- 2. You expect your withholding and credits to be less than the smaller of:

90% of the tax to be shown on your current year’s tax return, or

100% of the tax shown on your prior year’s tax return. (Your prior year tax return must cover all 12 months.)

To prepare estimates for next year, You can just type W4 in the search box at the top of your return , click on Find. Then Click on Jump To and it will take you to the estimated tax payments section. Say no to changing your W-4 and the next screen will start the estimated taxes section.

Husband is cdl driver, self emplyed.. pays lease payment and escrow. how do i deduct these espennses

As a self-employed taxpayer, you report his gross income and expenses ( such a fuel, truck lease, escrow , insurance,  etc. etc. ) on Schedule C --- you tell TurboTax  that you are self-employed  and it will walk you through all of this.  Note that there is  Self-Employment taxes at 15.3% on net income -- it is the equivalent of FICA for wage earners.

the lease payment goes as rental expenses on schedule-C while escrow ( depending on what the escrow is for ) can go under other expense ( at the bottom of schedule-C ) or  the category that best suits the reason for the escrow.

Good point @Critter#2 , this is business asset  like a  leased building used for business purposes

What EXACTLY is "escrow" and what does it cover?

Most likely, that is not directly deductible, but whatever the "escrow" pays for is deductible.  For example, if you pay $300 per month to "escrow" that eventually pays $3600 for vehicle insurance, you DON'T deduct the $300 per month, you only deduct the actual $3600 vehicle insurance whenever it is paid from the escrow.

If the lease doesn't go under vehicle expense does it  just go under misc expense on schedule C?

Bill is correct ... if the lease requires you to pay for insurance on the leased truck then they may insist on the monthly amount be escrowed so you only deduct the actual insurance paid at the end of the year and not what was put aside for the payment.

You "rent" the truck when you lease it just like a rental car ... put it under vehicle rentals.

If the lease, fuel, etc goes under vehcile rental, how does one claim mileage? and the other exoenses like detailing, and cb, antenna etc if not using vehicle expenses section

Husband is cdl driver, self emplyed.. pays lease payment and escrow. how do i deduct these espennses

You cannot claim mileage... you MUST use the actual expenses ONLY ... this is why you do NOT NOT NOT use the vehicle expenses section as that will only confuse you further especially since you do NOT own the truck ... the FUEL should be listed as such in the other expenses section, the repairs and maintenance are entered  in the categories named for the same.  Other items like the radio, GPS and such are either supplies or entered in categories you name yourself in the Other Misc Exp section.

It sounds like you REALLY should either pay a professional to do this return and educate you  OR  read the links in the answer below to get educated on the Sch C.
