How to do Multiple tax returns with the desktop version?

I have the desktop version of turbotax and have 2 children who need to file taxes.

Do they have to sign into my account in order to start their returns?

In the past, I think I have given them my code to download and they made their own account and used their own computers to do their taxes.

The TurboTax user license allows one user to install copies of TurboTax on up to five computers that the user owns. You can also prepare multiple returns, including returns for other people. But the license does not allow, and has never allowed, one copy to be shared among different people.  This year, that license is being enforced by requiring users to log into their TurboTax online account when they install the program for the first time. This locks one particular copy of the program and one license code to one user account. The only way you could install the program on a computer that you do not own, would be to give the other person your online username and password. And even though that workaround might allow the installation, it’s still a violation of the license.

The TurboTax software license only allows you to install the software on up to 5 computers that you own.  You would need to sign onto your TurboTax account for each new installation.

If using the same computer to start another tax return all you need to do is click on the File menu in the upper left of the desktop program screen and click on New Tax Return.  There is no need for you to sign onto your TurboTax account for another tax return using the same computer.

How to do Multiple tax returns with the desktop version?

Well Maria was able to verify that I should have been able to use my sons computer and up to 5 total other computers with my purchase of Turbo Tax, however we were never able to determine why your site NEVER showed me where to enter my PRODUCT CODE so we gave up trying and were forced to use my PC instead of my sons.  If you ever figure out where I can enter the product code please correct your system and advise . thanks

How to do Multiple tax returns with the desktop version?

I’ve completed one tax return, but want to start a new tax return.  I am on the tax home page but do not see an options to start a new return or an option to add something else. Is there someone else I need to look?

Thank you!

@Lpleake   Sounds like you are using the Online version?  Or did you install the Desktop program?

Online is only good for 1 return per account.  But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts.  You can start another return in TurboTax Online by:

  1. Logging out if you are in your account
  2. Choose what TurboTax Online product you want to use for the second return
  3. Create your account screen
  4. Set up a new login for the second return
  5. Start working on the new return

In the Desktop download program just go up to File-New.   But first be sure to save your return with a unique name so it doesn’t get confused with another return.  Go to File-Save or Save As.  Because if you do another return and they have the same first name or initial as you their return might save over yours.

I tried that already. It put a pending hold on my husband's account for 48 hours....

Is there a way to not have to create a new account?

I'm using the online version.

If you're using TurboTax Online and not filing as Married Filing Jointly, then yes, you will need a separate account for your husband, since you are each filing your own return.

You could start in the Desktop version, where you can prepare and efile up to five returns.
