How to apply my home heating credit from my light bill

You can claim your Michigan Home Heating credit by using Form MI-1040CR-7. TurboTax does support this form for e-filing. If Form MI-1040CR-7 is not found in your state return documents, then you can mail the form separately.

To revisit the home heating credit section in TurboTax you can do the following:

  1. Open your MI state tax return
  2. Look for the screen "Take a look at Michigan credits and taxes"
  3. Click "Start" or "Revisit" next to "Home Heating Credit" which is under "Personal, Home and Family Credits" on your Michigan state tax return.

If you decide to mail your Form MI-1040CR-7, you can mail your form to: Michigan Department of Treasury

                                                                                                                    Lansing, MI 48956

You should include a paper copy of your Michigan MI-1040 return when you send it, so they can refer to the household income numbers.

You will be eligible to claim the home heating credit if all of the following apply:

  • You own your home or are contracted to pay rent
  • You were NOT a full-time student who was claimed as a dependent on another person’s return
  • You did NOT live in college or university-operated housing for the entire year
  • You did NOT live in a licensed care facility for the entire year
  • Your income is within certain income limits
