How does one estimate how much taxes you may owe if you are applying for an extension?

Military retired pension W2 is incorrect.  Only recourse is to put in a "ticket" that they say they will have an answer to in 30 days.  That answer puts us at March 22nd, then will have to wait for the corrected W2.  We want to do a tax extension, but have no idea how to even estimate how much taxes we MIGHT owe this year

You would not have a W-2 for a pension.   You should have a 1099R.   Did you enter the 1099R in the right place or did you try to enter it as a W-2?

To enter your retirement income, Go to  Federal> Wages and Income>Retirement Plans and Social Security>IRA  401 k) Pension Plan Withdrawals to enter your 1099R.

You can enter the W-2 that is incorrect, but report the correct wages if you know what they are. That way you will know what you owe in taxes, if anything, and you can pay that in with your extension request. When you get the corrected W-2, just delete the one your entered and replace it with the correct one.
