How do I report my income as a English Teacher living abroad? I don't receive a W-2.

At the moment, I live and make all my money overseas. Is it possible for me to file my taxes using Turbotax or do I need another software?

Yes, you can use TurboTax.

You can now file federal (IRS) returns if you or your employer has a non-U.S. address. However, there are some restrictions regarding foreign-address returns:

  • IRS regulations require a U.S. bank account to receive your tax refund, and you'll need a U.S. bank account (or credit/debit card with a U.S. billing address) if paying additional federal taxes owed.
  • Like many stateside merchants, we require a U.S. billing address to pay for TurboTax if using a credit or debit card.
    • If you're deducting fees from your refund with the optional Pay With My Refund service, you'll need a U.S. or APO/FPO/DPO address.
  • Free products like TurboTax Free Edition and TurboTax Easy Extension require a U.S. or APO/FPO/DPO address upon registration.

Some states also let you e-file with non-U.S. addresses. We'll let you know if your state supports this.

To post wages without a w-2:

  1. Go to Wages & Income
  2. Scroll all the way down to Less Common Income
  3. Select Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C from the drop-down
  4. Select Other income not reported on a Form W-2
  5. Under Other Wages Received select Yes
  6. Continue to Any other earned income  Yes
  7. Select Other
  8. Post the Description and Amount

Okay, so if I earn a regular salary in a foriegn country for a foriegn company (that does not therefore supply W-2s) these are the steps to take?
