How do I report a payment with a state extension followed with a state refund due to overpayment?

Last year I filed an extension in IL. I made a payment. When I finalized and filed my return to the state, turbo tax identified that the the amount I paid upon submitting my extension was an overpayment. Therefore, I received a refund of part of the payment. Do I record the payment and refund this year? Or do I subtract the overpayment amount and submit the difference as payment made in 2018 for 2017 state taxes?

The current year deduction for state taxes paid should be the original payment less the overpayment. If the state sent you a 1099-G reporting the refund of the overpayment then report the total amount paid on Sch A, and report the refund as income on Sch 1 of the 1040.
