In order for someone who is not a parent to claim your child as a "Qualifying relative," they have to meet the following requirements:

  • The child isn't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • The child is a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • The child isn't filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • The child lived with them the entire year.
  • The child made less than $4,050 in 2017.
  • The person claiming the child provided more than half of their financial support.

In TurboTax, when you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them.
