How do I file unemployment refund

Did you have to repay unemployment in 2023?  Did you receive unemployment as well?  Did you have taxes withheld from your unemployment?

Does your 1099-G report the full  amount received for this year or does it report thee  amount received minus the amount paid back.  If it reports the amount received minus the amount paid back, then you will enter the 1099-G as normal without worry about the deduction.

If it does not report your repayment then as you enter your 1099-G, you will select Yes, for the question, "Did you pay back any of your 2023 unemployment benefits"  In this box you will then enter the amount repaid.  You can do this if you did not receive unemployment and have nothing to enter but the repayment.

If you are trying to enter the taxes you had withheld, there is a box that says Federal or state income tax was withheld on this payment.  Check that  box then on the next screen you will be able to enter the amount you had withheld.

If you repaid the an amount for a previous year, then you will not enter the amount on that screen, instead, you will hit continue after entering your income from unemployment, then you will hit continue again after the summary screen and answer Yes to Other Uncommon Unemployment Benefits.  Then Yes, do did you repay any government unemployment. Then you will enter the amount you  repaid.

To enter Unemployment select the following:

  • Federal
  • Income
  • Start Next to Unemployment and Paid Family Leave

To enter your stock sales you will select the following:

  • Federal
  • Income
  • Show More next to Investment Income
  • Start next to Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other (1099-B)
  • Walk through the steps of entering a 1099-B with the information you do have.  You will need to select long term basis did not receive form 1099-B

It doesn't matter which order you enter them, although Unemployment is at the top of the page and stocks are further down the page.  However, it will not change your tax outcome if you enter one before the other.
