DanaB27,
So I went through the first part as I only contributed to my 2021 Roth IRA by opening a traditional Roth for myself and also another for my spouse, in March of 2022 and funding it then transferring it to the Roth IRA for year 2021. Because of this I skipped the second section of your instructions since I did not fund a Traditional Roth for 2022.
I went ahead and deleted the sections I had filled out showing the contributions under "Retirement and Investments" under "Traditional IRA Contributions" although I do plan on contributing to my Roth IRA for tax year 2022, but I do not have to do a "Backdoor Roth" this year. So would I go ahead and enter the 12,000 like normal in here?
When I go to run the smart check I am getting 2 errors now for the following (see screenshots). One for Taxpayer and one for Spouse. Is this an error I have to worry about or can I ignore it and hit "done" ? If so, how do I fix this error?
Yes, if you made no non-deductible Traditional IRA Contributions in 2022, Line 15 for both of you would be $0.
Here's more info on Form 8606.
Why is this so confusing? This is such common task. Why is TurboTax making is so difficult?
MAKE THIS EASIER!
To be clear, you did not make a Roth IRA contribution, you made traditional IRA contribution. Do not enter any amount where TurboTax asks for the amount of a Roth IRA contribution. The Roth conversion is an entirely separate transaction reported only by entering the Form 1099-R that reports the distribution from the traditional IRA and answering TurboTax's follow-up questions. Two simple, separate entries.
I have had the same issue since 2022 and it is still not fixed. I see countless posts about the issue and not fixed. I Contribute to a Trad (after Tax) and convert the next day to a Roth and Turbo tax return says it is taxable. If you go to the 1099R and put a $0 in box 2a that seems to fix it. I would run my return to check all the forms to see, but it goes into "not responding" for 10min each time I ask for the 1040 PDF. Not sure what is up with Turbo Tax. Perhaps they should read all these posts and fix this!!
