You can delete your state return in TurboTax Online as long as you haven't paid or registered yet.
If you don't see the option to delete your state (you'll probably see Edit instead), you've already paid your TurboTax fees (including the state fee) or registered your free version while the state was on your return. If you've done either of these things, you can't delete your state return.
The answer on the FAQ is confusing, especially for first time users. The Status of your state return screen is at the end of the completed return. Simply stated, complete the return (I know, MAJOR waste of time) then once completed you're given the option to cancel or delay filing (the Status screen). Don't click on the menu in upper left corner , there's no help there. Don't try to skip over the state while you're there, it takes you back to where you were. Don't try to find other answers, on the FAQ because you won't find any. Hopefully you haven't paid yet and by all means, don't register until you absolutely have to. I hope this helps someone, anyone, just one. I felt like Sisyphus until I gave up, decided to file it and let the state kick it out because I had already filed my state return. That's when I finally found the Status screen. May God bless you in your endeavors.
