How can I open my downloaded .tax file in regular text?

Only the TurboTax software can read it.    Download the pdf file to read it.

Thank you @macuser_22. Maybe I have asked the wrong question. I had already downloaded the pdf file of my Federal and State returns, but what I am really looking for is a document of some kind that records my election to allow the IRS to withdraw the tax I owe from my bank account at a later date (May 14). This doesn't show up on the pdf returns, so I figured that the ".tax file" might contain this information. But when I downloaded it and opened it, all I got was a jumble of characters that looks like this PK  Šx˜R  manifest.xml

The pdf of all forms and worksheet should contain the same information .  Look for the "Information Worksheet"  part V.    The date you are looking for should be there.
