How can I hop into websites of payers (like banks, investment firms, etc.) so that info for various forms gets downloaded automatically?

In each section of the program where there are firms that offer to allow you to import information, TurboTax will give you the option to either import it or enter it yourself. This is most often offered by investment firms. Some forms are not available for import. You must know you log in information to be able to use it for each firm that you want to import from.
