If you have been assigned an identity protection PIN (IP PIN) and lost it or did not receive a CP01A notice, you will need to retrieve your IP PIN online or have it reissued to avoid processing delays.
If you file your return without your IP PIN:
- the IRS will reject your electronic return.
- the IRS will review your paper return to verify your identity which will delay your refund.
You are assigned an IP Pin if
- You are a victim of identity theft.
- You opted-in to receive an IP PIN.
How to retrieve your IP PIN online
- You may use your online account to retrieve your current IP PIN. Your IP PIN is available through your “Profile” page. If you do not already have an account on IRS.gov, you will be asked to create an account and validate your identity.
Note: A minor dependent IP PIN cannot be retrieved online. To retrieve a minor dependent IP PIN call 800-908-4490.
