3. Follow the on-screen instructions to e-file your extension (Form 4868).

Remember, you must file the extension by April 15, 2026, to avoid late-filing penalties. The extension gives you until October 15, 2026, to file your tax return but does not extend the time to pay any taxes owed, which are still due by April 15.
