if your spouse does not have a social security number or ITIN you cannot e-file nor can you file a joint return
You can still file a joint return by obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) or filing separately with a written explanation, but not electronically
Filing Options Without an SSN
1. Obtain an ITIN: If your spouse is not eligible for an SSN (common for non-citizen spouses), you can apply for an ITIN. This involves completing Form W-7 and submitting it along with your tax return. The ITIN serves as a substitute for the SSN for tax purposes and allows you to file jointly or separately without issues related to missing SSNs.
2 Filing Separately: If obtaining an ITIN is not feasible, you can file as Married Filing Separately. However, this option may result in higher tax rates and limit your eligibility for certain tax credits. When filing separately, you must mail your return and include a cover letter explaining why your spouse's SSN is missing.
3 Include a Written Explanation: When filing without your spouse's SSN, attach a statement to your tax return that includes your spouse's full name, birthdate, and last known address. This helps the IRS understand your situation and may prevent issues with your return.
this does not cover the situation if you are a non-resident. see IRS webpage

Important Considerations
Tax Credits and Deductions: Filing separately may limit your access to certain tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC). It's essential to evaluate the financial impact of your filing status.
State Tax Implications: Be aware that state tax laws may differ from federal regulations regarding the use of ITINs and filing statuses. Check your state's requirements to ensure compliance.
Consult a Tax Professional: If you're unsure about the best course of action or need assistance with the application process for an ITIN, consider consulting a tax professional who can provide personalized guidance based on your situation.
@beto4g the efile system checks for valid social security numbers (if ITINs). If you enter an invalid number into the social security field, the tax tax return will reject.
The first expert threw a lot at you. If you want to take it slow, start by answering,
1. Where does your wife live?
2. Is she eligible for an SSN?
3. Does she have her own income, either in the US or overseas?
