If a business paid you, the business should have a number similar to their EIN, but issued by the state in which they are located.
Hi @KrisD15 - It appears my full question got truncated - here it is:
Does the "State identification no." field under the Wages & Income > Second home (investment) form correspond to the FEIN field on California state's form 593? The verbiage is slightly different and I just needed clarification. In this case, the "business" was the title company that submitted the 593 form on my behalf. Since they entered a numeric value in the FEIN field and the 593 is the state form, I figured it was the state ID number referenced in TurboTax, but I didn't want to assume.
Hopefully that's enough information for you or someone else to provide a definitive answer. The title company believes it to be same number, but then suggested I contact a tax professional.
Thanks.
If you are asking if the FEIN number can be entered as the State Identification Number,
NO, they are not interchangeable.
Entering a State ID number is optional, correct?
Yes, it is optional in the TurboTax online form. I wasn't sure if it might cause issues to leave it blank, though. So just entering the state and withholding amount is sufficient for the federal entry?
My primary question is if the number my title company entered in the FEIN field is what TurboTax is referring to as the "state identification no.", since the state's instructions state it could be a number of things:
Enter a business name or individual name, not both. If the party is an escrow company, title company, exchange company, corporation, partnership, limited liability company, nongrantor trust, or estate, enter the business name and business identification number (FEIN, CA Corp no., CA SOS file no.). If the business name is not applicable, include the individual's or grantor's first name, initial, last name, and identification number (SSN or ITIN).

If there is state income tax withheld, leaving the Employer's state ID number blank is not optional. You will get a Needs review message after Federal Review. If the box is blank on the tax form, you can safely enter the same number as the federal EIN to proceed with filing your tax returns.
Thanks, @FangxiaL. Just an FYI, the field on the online form is not set as a required field (i.e., with a red asterisk) - see below screen shot - and so you can submit the form and not receive an error that the field is required and that a value must be entered. And even with the number entered, I still get a Needs Review warning - so either that number is not triggering the Needs Review warning and/or there is something else that is causing that warning - perhaps it's related to the different warning related to a business investment - see second screen shot below.
I received confirmation from the title company this morning that the number the had provided (and entered on the 593 form FEIN field) is indeed also their state ID number, so I will add it back.
Here is a screenshot of the form fields:
This is the warning at the top of the form, but the investment was not used for business and I'm relatively certain I have entered all the other fields correctly:
