Ok, I have been married since 2011. Me and my husband have never filed married joint or separately, we have always filed single but I haven't been able to work since June 2024. I have filed for disability because of health issues have stopped me from working but haven't been approved yet. Should my husband for 2025 change it married filing jointly now that I'm not working?

    • Yes - MFJ is usually more beneficial than MFS or Single.

Married taxpayers are required to file as either married filing jointly or married filing separately, regardless of which married partner is working.

You should file a joint return for 2024 unless you both agree to file married filing separately, which is often not as beneficial.

See this tax help article about the different filing statuses and this one about changing your status.
