The rush is on to get your taxes filed! The extension deadline of October 15, 2024 (for 2023 Individual Income tax returns) is rapidly approaching. Maybe you were waiting for important tax information before you filed. Or maybe you thought of a gazillion other things to do that were way more fun than filing taxes! (I get that!)
Whatever your reason - it’s “go time” now!
Remember - filing that extension (Form 4868) only gave you additional time to file, not to pay. The good news - if you’re receiving a refund or don’t owe additional taxes, there usually are no underpayment penalties. The bad news - if you owe more than you thought you would, you may have to pay penalties - and even interest. Check out how penalties and interest work by going to our Guide to IRS Tax Penalties.
