HELP can't open 2024 desktop data file and it won't open/ recognize

To open your 2024 TurboTax file, move the .tax2024 file out of the zipped folder to your local documents folder. Make sure that TurboTax 2024 is updated, and use File > Open Tax Return inside your TurboTax program instead of double-clicking it.

Things you can try:

  • Do not try to open the file while it is still inside the zipped folder.
  • Right-click the zipped folder, select "Extract All," and save the ...tax2024 file to your Documents > TurboTax folder
  • Open the TurboTax 2024 desktop application first. Then select File in the top menu, then Open Tax Return. Browse to the folder where you moved the file
  • Make sure the 2024 file is on your computer's hard drive
  • Make sure it is not in Read only format.Right click on the file, select properties and uncheck the box for read only.
  • Make sure that Norton 360 is disabled if you have it.
