Hello, There is an "other income" (RTAA payment on schedule 1 line 8-Z) that shouldn't be there. It was accounted for in line 7. How can I remove this?

I received both unemployment and Paid family leave from CA EDD in 2024. I reported both incomes in 1099 G but the unemployment income was accounted for twice (2nd time as other income "RTAA") on schedule 1. How can i remove it?

RTAA would be reported as "other Income" on Schedule 1 line 8z and Unemployment is listed on line 7.

To clarify, Did you get BOTH unemployment AND RTAA?

Did one of the payment amounts double?

This has also happened to me.  I have reported an amount on Schedule 1, line 7, but it shows up again in line 8Z titled RTAA Payment.  Double counts the amount in Line 7.  How can I delete line 8Z?  thank you

Hello, There is an "other income" (RTAA payment on schedule 1 line 8-Z) that shouldn't be there. It was accounted for in line 7. How can I remove this?

RTAA payments are reported on line 8z of the tax return and line 7 is for unemployment income. According to the Department of Labor, the RTAA is Reemployment Trade Adjustment Assistance, this TAA Program benefit is a wage supplement that is available to reemployed workers age 50 and older for up to two years and covers a portion of the difference between a worker’s new wage and their old wage (up to a specified maximum amount). A/RTAA signifies two different benefits, Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance or ATAA (enacted under the 2002 Program), and Reemployment Trade Adjustment Assistance (enacted under the 2009 Program and reauthorized under the 2011 and 2015 Programs, RTAA replaced ATAA). As is the case for TRA, eligibility for ATAA or RTAA is dependent on which version of the TAA Program the worker is covered under, which can be determined by the petition number of the certification of the worker group."

If you did not receive RTAA, you can remove it in TurboTax:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax Online
  2. Click Federal Taxes,
  3. Click Wage and Income and then go to the section called 1099-MISC and Other Common Income and click show more.
  4. Select delete next to Other 1099-G income to enter your RTAA payments.

HI Thank you for replying.  Unfortunately I have done that already and there is no form to delete.  I have also gone to "Tools" and "Delete Forms" and only see one 1099-Misc that is not related.  What has happen is that on Schedule 1 Line 7, I have two 1099G entries totaling 21K.  That total amount, 21K, for some reason shows up again in line 8Z (title RTAA Payments) and then is double counted in the sum line 9....an additional 21K is added to my income.  Should I try and delete the 1099G entries and start again?  Or the one 1099-Misc form?  I hate to delete that form as I have a lot of off-setting expenses attached to it.  thank you for you help.  Robbie

Hello, There is an "other income" (RTAA payment on schedule 1 line 8-Z) that shouldn't be there. It was accounted for in line 7. How can I remove this?

First, are you using TurboTax Desktop or TurboTax Online?

If you are using TurboTax Online, follow these steps:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click Federal.
  • Down the left side of the screen, click Wages & Income.
  • Click on the down arrow to the right of Less Common Income.
  • Click to the right of Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C.

You may see the icon Revisit to the right of:

  • Other income not already reported on a Form W-2 or Form 1099, or
  • Other reportable income.

There are pathways under both of these icons that could have posted to the Other Income line 8z line of Schedule 1.

I would check here before I would consider deleting the IRS form 1099-G entries that have off-setting expenses.

If this does not completely answer your question, please contact us again and provide more information.

Hello, There is an "other income" (RTAA payment on schedule 1 line 8-Z) that shouldn't be there. It was accounted for in line 7. How can I remove this?

Thank you James.  I am using the on-line version.  I did as you instructed.  Unfortunately I had already tried both approaches and it did not work.

When I went to:

Other income not already reported on a Form W-2

or

Other reportable income

The buttons read Revisit.  I selected one after the other.

Screen 1

Other Waged Received?  I selected no, and it takes me back to the Miscellaneous Income list.  No amount was listed.

Screen 2

Any Other Taxable Income?  I selected no, and it takes me back to Miscellaneous Income List.  Same as above.  Nothing listed.

The duplicated figure on Line 8Z does not show up on my summary of Wages and Income.

However it shows up:

1) In my final review "Here's an overview of this years taxes:"

2) It was calculating in the Header....top left corner of main screen:  Federal Refund $xxx  State Refund $xxx

3) I can see it in 'Tools',  1040 Schedule 1, Line 8Z.  Amount 8Z is the exact amount as Line 7.  It is adding it twice.

4) When I go to "Tools" and Delete Forms,  I see..... Other Income Statement......listed.  When I hit Delete, screed  does not show anything listed only a final Warning before deletion.

Thank you for your help.

So the 1099G entries were duplicated on line 8z of Schedule 1?

Did Delete a forms for Other Income remove the duplicate income?

Hi James, I just delete the form and no change. I am not sure what I delete as you are not able to see the Form before you delete.  I went to the 1040 Schedule 1 and it is still double counting line 7 to Line 8z.  Baffling.

You may need to delete and re-enter the 1099-G income.  Are there multiple 1099-G entries?  Perhaps you could delete just one and see what happens.

Hi James, I thought I would get back to my taxes today as one critical tax form showed.  Back to my problem.  I have two 1099G forms.  I went to FROMS and deleted both.  The numbers in Line 7 and 8Z went away.  Then I entered the two 1099G forms and unfortunately they are counting twice again and reappear in line 8Z. So frustrating.  I am at a loss as it is adding 20K of income to my taxes.  thanks Robbie

Hello, There is an "other income" (RTAA payment on schedule 1 line 8-Z) that shouldn't be there. It was accounted for in line 7. How can I remove this?

Naturally, when I enter two 1099-Gs for a California resident, I get only the original amount and no duplication. So let's try to see what's different. (in my test, they both show up in line 7 but not in 8z).

Did you enter these 1099-Gs under Wages & Income->Unemployment or Wages & Income->1099 Misc and other common income? I did Wages & Income->Unemployment.

Next, tell me the questions you saw and how you answered them.

I had the exact same problem with my tax form. My Unemployment income was duplicated on line 8-Z just like yours. What I did was remove the form and start fresh. But this time instead of posting a photo of the 1099-G form, I just entered the info in manually and it worked. It removed that duplicated income and my refund went up dramatically. I also filled in the State again below the locality section. Hope this helps.
