Head of household

The taxpayer paid all household expenses and fully maintains the home (100%). She is single, has never been married, and supports her 23-year-old unmarried son, who lived with her throughout 2024. He works and has a W-2 with $16,000 in earnings. He is not a student, and his mother still supports him.

Could the taxpayer claim Head of Household (HOH) status?

Head of household

No, based on the information that you provided, she wouldn't be able to use the Head of Household filing status.  Her son doesn't qualify as a qualifying relative because he doesn't qualify as a dependent because of his income.

Refer to the TurboTax articles: What is a "qualifying person" for Head of Household?and  Do I qualify for Head of Household in 2024?
