I received form 1099-G for a taxable grant: $4800. But I was unable to use the full amount. I used only $1105, and repaid the rest to the department (of State).
How do I best reflect that on my input?
If I input only $1105, I worry that the discrepancy/mismatched amount with the amount on file with the 1099-G will trigger a problem.
If I want to add a FOOTNOTE explaining the discrepancy, then I must print out and mail the whole thing!
Further, NewYorkState requires e-filing, but TurboTax will not e-file a state unless federal is also e-filed.

Report the entire amount in the 1099-G interview (Other Common Income > Other 1099-G income), and then report the amount repaid as follows:
Type "other reportable income" in the search window (or in the Search Topic window for desktop versions)
Click on "jump to other reportable income (or "other reportable income" in the Search Topic results)
Answer "No" to "Did you receive any other wages?"
Select "Other reportable income" from the Miscellaneous income list
Select Add another Income item on the Other Miscellaneous Income Summary screen
Enter a Description (1099-G Repayment) and the amount repaid as a negative number, then click on Continue
Yes, NY "requires" you to e-file your state return, but you can still file it by mail without penalty of any kind.

Excellent response that finally answers my question.
But I have two items of concern:
1- a TurboTax helper who I spoke with the previous day had told me that 1099-G Taxable Grant entry would not e-file, that I would have to mail a printout (obviously not correct info);
2- "other reportable income" in the searchbox does not return the proper link; however, navigating to the Income interview can get me there.
Thanks again for the excellent advice, both about 1099-G Repaid, and about NYS tax "requirement"
