Double check the SSN and the date of birth you entered in MY NFO for your child.   If they are correct and your e-file is being rejected, then you will need to file your return by mail.   Print, sign and date it in ink, and mail the return in.  The IRS will sort out the SSN issue.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

If the rejection is for an Incorrect Social Security Number, there are three ways that that can happen.

  1. Incorrect Social Security Number
  2. Incorrect birth Date
  3. Incorrect spelling, or typing of Name.

I'm sure you're confident of all of these entries, but please check them.

Check that the SSN, Birth Date and Name match your child's Social Security Card.

See the forth bullet point on the IRS article Age, Name or SSN Rejects, Errors, Correction Procedures
