Filing Head of Household

I've received conflicting answers about this question, so I want to be sure.

My baby was born in late July. I'm single and he lives with me full time, and I am the sole provider for him. Can I claim head of household on my 2024 taxes?

Filing Head of Household

If you are Single and have a child as a dependent your filing status can be Head of Household if you also provide over one-half the cost to maintain your household.

Filing Head of Household

Probably, yes.

The child must live in your home with you more than half the year, or more than half the time since they were born.  In turbotax, select "the whole year" -- if you select 5 months because the child was born in July, you won't be eligible.

You must be single (unmarried), or married but separated from your spouse for all of the last 6 months of the year.

You must provide more than half the cost of keeping the home where you live with the child.  Other people can help (government assistance, charity, family), but you must pay more than half the overall cost.
