Filing for deceased parent

Hi:

I am filing a return for a deceased parent where there is no will or named personal representative. This is not the final return and there is no refund or payment due for 2025. Do I need to file form 56 and request a EIN to file this return.

I would also like to do this electronically through turbo tax.  Please advise.

Thank you for any help.

Filing for deceased parent

Someone needs to be the personal representative, which is court-appointed, the executor of a will, or anyone in possession of the decedent's property (the latter I would assume applies to you).

You can simply prepare the Form 56 and mail it in and then apply for an EIN online for the estate.

I believe only TurboTax Business supports Form 56.
