Filed married jointly

My husband and I both selected file married jointly. We had our own accounts and only put in our own information. (We messed up and treated it like filing separately). Mine was accepted and his was not. What do I need to do so that he also gets his return?

Yep, you messed up.    When you file a joint return all of your combined information goes on ONE return.   Wait until your return has been fully processed, and then you will have to amend to add all of your spouse's information and income to that one.   He can keep a record of how to access his "old" account since his past year returns will be saved there for seven years.  But going forward, use the same account for your joint returns and do not try to change the order of the names.

And....it will not be "your" refund and "his" refund.   It will be a refund with both names on it.     If you filed your return and got the married filing jointly standard deduction, then a lot less of your income was taxed.  Do not view the new refund amount as being only "his" when you add more income to the joint return.  If you receive a refund for your incorrect return and there is some additional refund when you amend---add it all up---that is the refund for both of you.

Thank you for the help. It was our first year doing it and of course we didn’t research before. Big mistake that we will certainly learn from!

Once your tax return is settled and the finances are finished, you will be able to amend your return to add your spouse and his income.
