Federal return was filed and accepted on April 1, but the payment due has not yet been debited from checking account that I provided. Is it normal to take this long?

Yes, there might be delays with the IRS withdrawing the balance due. Generally, the IRS will withdraw the balance due at the date selected.

Please be aware this year you have until May 17th to pay your balance due.
