Fed Identification number for dividends

My 1099-DIV for a stock has for it's Payer's Federal ID No. 00-0000000.  The program won't accept it, nor will it file my return electronically unless there is a number.  What's the solution?

The Federal Identification Number (FEIN) is a unique 9-digit number assigned by the IRS to businesses, including financial institutions. You can typically find this number in Box 4 on Form 1099-DIV.

  • Publicly traded companies also include their FEIN on their filings with the SEC or EDGAR

If your 1099-DIV shows the Payer's Federal ID No. as 00-0000000, it is possible won't be accepted for e-filing. Here are a few steps to resolve this:

  • Contact the Payer: Call the bank or company that gave you the 1099-DIV to get the right Federal Identification Number (FEIN).
  • You can search for FEIN  if the company is publicly traded, you can search for their filings on the SEC's EDGAR database or Search Filings on SEC.gov they normally include the FEIN number.
