Am I able to file another extension after Oct 15? I’m currently unemployed and it says I owe a big amount and just can’t pay it at the moment.

There is only one extension request allowed for each tax year.  For 2023 the extension request had to be filed on or before April 15, 2024.

If you have taxes owed you need to file your tax return on or before October 15, 2024 if you requested an extension so that you will not get a failure to file penalty.

You can request a payment plan from the IRS on this IRS website, but you need to file the 2023 tax return - https://www.irs.gov/payments/online-payment-agreement-application

You can’t extend your tax deadline past October 15, but you can still file your return after October. Just remember, you’ll have a penalty added.

What if I owe the IRS but can't pay?

If you find yourself in this situation, you have a few options available, such as:

    • Credit card payments
    • Installment agreements
    • Offer in compromise
