Can I file for an extension on completing the 2018 returns or do I just need to submit?

A 2018 extension request using IRS Form 4868 had to be filed on or before April 15, 2019 for US residents.

Just file your completed 2018 tax return. There are no penalties for filing the tax return after the due date if you are receiving a tax refund or there are no taxes owed.
