For my 2022 tax return, on November 14 2022, I mistakenly made a x000.00 contribution to my Roth account which is held at Fidelity, my income was too high to make the contribution. On November 15 2022 I filled out an excess contribution form and withdrew the money. Fidelity issued a 1099-R showing
Box 1. X000.00 Box 2. 0.00 Box7. 8J
When I filed my taxes, I inadvertently did not show the letter code J.
The IRS sent a letter saying I owe XXXX.00 plus a penalty.
If I simply upload the 1099-R and explain to them I failed to show letter code J. along with the November statement showing the contribution and immediate withdraw. Will that solve the issue or do I need to file an amended return. Also Fidelity issued form 5498 Roth contribution for x000.00 I did not report the contribution on my tax return because I felt it was a moot point.
Thank You
