How did you override the figures? I open the 8615 QDCG form hoping fields could be editable, but can't change any values for line 8 and 15.
Right Click on the field and you should see options , one is to override , clikc on that and you should be able to enter the amount.
Thank you for the details. Made the changes and resubmitted. 30 minutes later - Voila, received an acknowledgement that Federal return was accepted! Funny thing is I checked last year's 2018 return for our son and the errors for lines 8 and 15 are there as well, but this year's 8615 QDCG worksheet has additional calculations creating an error in the final tax figure. Need to remember this trick for next year - thanks again!
So I went back and compared the HR Block vs TT forms 8615 and also downloaded the 2019 instructions from the IRS website. Both programs compute the form/tax correctly, however, the HR Block form has a typed in overprint on the Qualified Dividends and CG Tax worksheet for lines 8 and 15 which matches the new 2019 IRS instructions (page 3), but the TT version of the form does not. You should NOT over-ride lines 8 and 15 per the form instructions in the TT program, although when I did this it produced a much more favorable tax answer!
I do not know why my TT e-file was rejected but the HR block e-file was accepted when the numbers appeared identical; this form overprint is the only difference I could find. The lack of explanation and/or error checking from TT is frustrating, and I'm very skeptical that the IRS or Covid-19 is to blame when HR block has it right. Hope this helps someone...
I just talked to someone "live" at TurboTax who told me that the form 8615 line 7 error is getting fixed tomorrow, April 3, 2020. I had the same issue. The taxes were rejected by the IRS (and the state) and then I waited until March 19 and resubmitted only to have it rejected again. I was not going to file another time only to have it rejected again. She suggested that I re-do the form this weeked.
For what it's worth as of 4/6/20 the errors in computing 8615 worksheets still persists! Having much the same experiences as others have related and talking to various CPA in the TurboTax service as well as IT professionals that swore it was fixed; they still speak with out fixing the issues. I have resorted to looking at the IRS latest instructions for 8615 and found that the IRS updated their package for CY2018 and called it CY2019 ( forms inside didn't roll the CY correctly! ugh!! rev=Feb 2020) Seems like everyone is afflicted with issues? Long story short; I manually hit override serval place in the worksheets as suggested earlier and viola! It was accepted when electronically filed thru TurboTax.
I am still unable to e-file my child's tax return with Form 8615 under the pre-TCJA rules. I am using the downloaded TT software and it is up-to-date. My child's refund is much larger using the pre-TCJA rules rather than the current TCJA tax. Is this a turbotax issue or an IRS issue? Now that the IRS is not processing refunds by paper given the current situation, it is unfortunate that the return cannot be e-filed.
Around 12-April-20, with fully updated software, I again tried to e-file my son's tax return. I had not edited the form in any way. This time, the error message came back telling me I could not efile in his case (being the first filing for someone under 16 yo). So I gave up on efiling and filed by mail.
It would appear that I was never going to be able to efile for my son. So i wasted a good deal of time attempting to do the impossible. It would obviously have been nice to know earlier!
Check my previous posts. I was able to manually edit the Form 8615 per @emtrebs50 details. And so was @tedross_0077. It can be done and it works. Good luck.
@bbchin No did not work and I don't believe I have the same problem. I don't even have the QDCG worksheet (not needed in my situation). Did you select to file taxes with pre-TCJA rules? I am able to file with regular TCJA rules, but once I check the box to calculate with pre-TCJA rules I am not able to e-file. I was on the phone earlier with TT and she claimed I just had to update my software. I made sure my computer software was up to date and am still having this problem.
@mgt7 - yes, filed with regular TCJA rules. So right-clicking on a specific cell does not pop-up a contextual menu? There is an Override (Ctrl+D) option when you right-click on a cell. I edited the QDCG worksheet to correct the final Form 8615, but I checked on the standard Form 8615 and that form is editable.
So it turns out, I have to paper file because my son is under 16. For some reason, the IRS will not allow children under 16 to electronically file. Ugh! Thanks though for your response.
