You can claim education expenses for education credits for your child only if your overseas university is an eligible educational institution.

You can use this IRS link to check if your University is an eligible educational institution.

My spouse is also abroad completing higher studies; we file tax returns married-jointly. can he claim the educational expenses in the tax return?

Yes. Your spouse can claim education expenses if they are qualified, and the expenses are qualified, and you fall under the income limits.

Enter his Form 1098-T. The TurboTax education maximizer at the end will decide on the best type of education credit.

    1. Type 1098-t in Search in the top right
    2. Select Jump to 1098-t
