1099misc Different tax rate if income is related to my primary job?

I noticed different tax rates were applied to my Misc income depending on whether or not I specified it was from work related to my primary job.  (Either that or it differed depending on whether or not I specified that I *intended* to earn the money.)  Can someone explain?

The income tax rate is no different from a Form 1099-MISC than other forms.

The difference is when an individual has 1099-MISC income from a Self-Employed venture, they also may have to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes in addition to income taxes.
