EDD Overpayment Waived

I was notified by EDD that I was overpaid unemployment benefits last year of $4,642. I received a 1099G form for this. However, my overpayment waiver just got approved so I do not need to pay any of the amount back. I'm about to file my 2022 taxes (I qualified for an extension in CA) and I'm wondering if I'll still need to pay taxes on the amount listed on 1099G? And if I don't need to, then do I still need to report 1099G amount when I file? Thank you.

You have to enter the 1099-G in your tax return and you have to pay tax on the full amount shown on the 1099-G. You did receive the income, and you got to keep it all. The fact that it was more than you should have received does not make it non-taxable. You pay tax on all of the income that you received, whether or not it was the correct amount.
