Why does it cost so much to e-file your state return? We are talking a "Key Stroke" in the computer world. I can see a fee for more than one, but the first one should be free.

It is a key press for you.
What about all the technology and expertise involved to make the ENTER key function??
Right. TT must program the state forms; test them; get them approved by the state; and then maintain them.
That technology has been paid for over and over for the past many years! Don't play me for stupid, they didn't just invent the enter key. All they do is tweak it from year to year, if there is a change and I can tell you our state taxes have not changed in 20 years that I have been filing so don't tell me about the poor big corporation! I call Bull**bleep** on your answer!!!
When it is time to file your state, you are tired of working on income tax. You pay for the convenience of not having to start up the printer, make sure you have enough paper and ink, printing the forms, signing, gathering up the required documents to send, finding the right envelope, addressing the envelope and then taking it to a place with a mail service that notifies you when it is received. Then track the mail until you get confirmation.
You are paying for time and convenience,
If it costs too much, you can just mail it.
