E-file reject no form 8949

If you have already completed your return and received an e-file reject, to get back into your return you will need to log back-in and add a state.  You won't actually be adding a state to your return, but when you click on Add a State this will open the application so that you can access your original entries.  Here are the steps to add a state and get back into your return:

  1. Sign in TurboTax.
  2. Select Tax Home from the menu.
  3. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.
  4. Select 2021, and then select Add a State (remember you're not actually adding a state, this just gets you back in).

You'll now be in your return.

These are the reasons why you would not need Form 8949.

  • You received a Form 1099-B (or substitute statement) that shows basis was reported to the IRS and doesn't show any adjustments in box 1f or 1g;
  • The Ordinary box in box 2 isn’t checked;
  • You don't need to make any adjustments to the basis or type of gain (or loss) reported on Form 1099-B (or substitute statement), or to your gain (or loss); and
  • You aren’t electing to defer income due to an investment in a QOF (Qualified Opportunity Fund) and aren’t terminating deferral from an investment in a QOF.

Many taxpayers have transactions on their 1099-B where cost basis was reported and some transactions where cost basis was not reported.  If you had any transactions where cost basis was not reported (uncovered transactions) then you will need to complete Form 8949.  To prepare a Form 8949, follow these steps:

  1. After opening your account.
  2. Click on Income & Expenses
  3. Scroll down the page to Investment Income
  4. Select Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, etc.
  5. As you move through the next few pages, you will see an option to enter your transactions manually.
  6. After selecting the option to enter your transactions manually, proceed to enter your trade information.
  7. If you have a 1099-B, you can also select the option to upload your transactions on the same page where you have the option to enter your transactions manually.
