Question

Drivers License

My son lost his driver's license and is awaiting his new one.  He currently has his temporary license.

Can he use the temporary license information to e-file, or does he have to wait for his new license to arrive?

Also, if he cannot use the temporary driver's license information, and the new license does not come before the filing deadline.  Can another ID (i.e. a passport) be used?  Or will he have to file an extension?

Please advise and thanks

No you cannot use a passport.   The IRS does not require you to enter a drivers license in order to e-file; it just adds an extra layer of security.   A few states are pretty picky about the requirement for a driver's license or state ID and will not let you e-file the state without it.   He can skip the license part; if the state will not allow e-filing he can print and mail the state.

For most states if you mark that you do not have a driver's license it will skip that information and let you file without one.
