Does anyone one know how to go about dealing with IRS when they wont give any information as to what is needed or even missing in my already filed tax return?

I filed in February of 2025. received a letter in March and have continued to receive letters asking for extension of time. The letter does not state the issue or what is missing and when I call the IRS agents Arnt helpful. Now they are saying wait till February of 2026 to call again

it may help if you tell us the notice/letter number. there may be nothing missing or wrong with your return. someone else may have filed using your SSN. this is just an example.  what are you told when you ask about what's holding up your return?

then again the Taxpayers Advocate Service may be able to help

What the Taxpayer Advocate Service can do for taxpayers

TAS can help taxpayers resolve problems that they haven't been able to resolve with the IRS on their own. The service is free. TAS helps all taxpayers and their representatives, including individuals, businesses and exempt organizations. If taxpayers qualify for TAS help, an advocate will be with them at every turn and do everything possible to assist throughout the process. Taxpayers can use the qualifier tool to determine if they are eligible for TAS assistance.

Taxpayers may be eligible for TAS help if:

  • Their IRS problem is causing financial difficulty.
  • They've tried and been unable to resolve their issue with the IRS.
  • They believe an IRS system, process or procedure just isn't working as it should.

Taxpayers can request assistance by completing and submitting Form 911, Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service Assistance. Full instructions are on the TAS website.
